Using Essential Oils During Cold & Flu Season

It’s Wednesday, when we celebrate all things wellness related. Today, I’m focusing on using essential oils to boost your immunity.

January marks cold and flu season and, in addition to eating well, getting the flu shot, taking Elderberry syrup and vitamin C, and getting enough sleep, I’m experimenting with essential oils to keep my family healthy.

My friend Sherry, from Capricorn and Clove, has been using essential oils since training as an aromatherapist more than 20 years ago. She’s seen a lot of oil trends come and go, but knows what works for most people year in and year out. I asked her what oils were helpful in supporting one’s immunity and helping you feel better if you do get sick. She was happy to share her advice:

Hello! 

If you’re new to Essential Oils, here are a few tips using 3 of the more common oils.

To help relieve a stuffy nose, use these in a diffuser or in a hot bath:
-4 drops Eucalyptus Globulus (antiviral, clearing nasal passages, expectorant)
-3 drops Lavender (strong antiviral, anti-inflammatory, relaxing)
-3 drops Lemon (boosts immune system, anti-viral, detoxifying)

Also, diffusing will help combat the spread of germs in the air!

To calm a cough, add the same combination and drops of the Essential Oils listed above to 4 tsps of a carrier oil such as grapeseed or apricot kernel oil. Rub this blend into chest and throat morning and night. For body aches and pains, use this same blend as a massage oil.

During cold and flu season, I diffuse Young Living’s Thieves oil, a warming blend of clove, cinnamon, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus to help support a healthy immune system.

I plan to keep my diffuser on all winter since it smells amazing, adds humidity to the house, and helps keep germs in check.
