Derby Day + Striped Dress

Happy Saturday! Happy Derby Day! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

I hope everyone is safe and sound. We had a wild windstorm in the GTA and there are trees down everywhere. Thankfully the power has been restored and we have no damage. One of our neighbours was not so lucky and a tree fell through their house, ripping into the roof and knocking down the chimney. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Today is Derby Day! Such festivity. I can’t wait to have our house back under control so we can host another party.

Yesterday, I popped into Nordstrom to check out a Striped Caslon dress I saw online. It’s triple points weekend so the place was busy. I bumped into a neighbour who was doing the same thing. Kindred spirits!

The dress is an interesting one. It looks pretty traditional t-shirt dress-y at the front.

But then has some pretty detailing in the back.

It’s the mullet of dresses, but in a good way!

You need to size down. I ended up buying the extra small off the mannequin (I’m one of those customers.)

For context, I’m a size 4-6 with a size 6-8 waistband right now. So I’m not particularly tiny. But because this dress is full, you need it fitted in the shoulders or you will look like you’re sporting a termite tent.

I also tried on this BP Tiered Denim skirt and it is the bomb. It’s super flattering and will look fab with a t-shirt and espadrilles. It’s on markdown, so, girls, run to the phone. I took a size small.

As a Canadian, if I can find an item in store, it’s often quite a bit cheaper once you factor in the duties and taxes. It’s worth it to call a store to see if they have what you want.

I’m going to pop by Crate and Barrel today to check out their new collab with Draper James. It looks promising and perfect for Derby Day, y’all! If you go to the store in Yorkdale, they are having a little party from 1:00 to 3:00. People, there will be cupcakes.

I’d be remiss if I did not tell you about Beautycounter’s new lipsticks for summer. I am wearing First Date on repeat and it’s so pretty for this time of year. Plus, no nasty chemicals.

Enjoy your day!

  1. Hi Jen, for even more context, how tall are you? I love the pleat in the back, such a lovely detail. We must have got the tail end of the wind storm – we could hear it last night but I don’t think there has been any damage in these parts.

    • I’m 5’6. The pleat makes it more interesting but adds to the volume. They have a straighter cut dress, but I liked this one better. Plus, it has pockets! XO

Love to hear from you!
